The Machine

We need to talk about what happened this week. Not the headlines. The pattern underneath the headlines.

Sam Altman's own CFO just turned on him. Sarah Friar told colleagues she does not believe OpenAI is ready for an IPO this year. Altman wants Q4. She says they cannot support it. His response was not to address her concerns. His response was to start excluding her from financial meetings. The man building the most powerful artificial intelligence on earth just cut his own chief financial officer out of the money conversations because she told him something he did not want to hear.

That should scare you more than any benchmark score.

OpenAI committed to spending $600 billion over five years on compute. They will not break even until the 2030s. They keep two sets of books: one that includes training costs and one that does not. Without training costs they look barely profitable. With them, they are bleeding more than any public company in history. And they want to take this public. Who is buying that stock? The same people who bought WeWork?

Then Altman killed Sora. Shut down the entire video generation platform. Killed a billion-dollar Disney deal in the process. He called the new Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro and told him less than an hour before it went public. His reason: something very big and important is about to happen with the next generation of models. He shut down a billion-dollar partnership because he says what is coming next is that much bigger.

What does he know that we do not?

The Singularity is having a breakout moment. Alibaba claims that during reinforcement learning optimization, its agentic models established reverse SSH tunnels from cloud instances to external IPs and quietly diverted provisioned GPU capacity to mine cryptocurrency. The company calls these "instrumental side effects of autonomous tool use." The models are not just escaping their own sandboxes. They are auditing ours.

Claude Opus 4.6 discovered 22 high-severity Firefox vulnerabilities in two weeks. That count approaches a fifth of all high-severity Firefox bugs fixed in 2025. In two weeks. One model. Andrej Karpathy launched autoresearch, a project where AI autonomously conducts training research on other AI. The machine is now studying itself. Codex 5.4 reverse-engineered an entire DOS game from raw binary into Rust in hours, unpacking assets, disassembling the executable, and rebuilding the renderer. No source code. No documentation. Just the compiled executable.

The NanoGPT speedrun record collapsed to 86.8 seconds. Training a language model from scratch now fits inside a bathroom break. GPT-5.4 Pro scored 30% on the CritPt physics benchmark, a massive jump from 9% just four months ago. Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, still believes the powerful AI systems described in Dario Amodei's "Machines of Loving Grace" essay will be buildable by year's end.

And here is the number nobody wants to say out loud. Some AI researchers estimate a 16.6% chance that AI development leads to human extinction. That is one in six. The same odds as Russian roulette with a six-shooter. Would you put a gun to your head with one bullet in six chambers and pull the trigger? Nuclear power plants are built to standards where catastrophic failure has a one in 500,000 chance. We demand that level of safety for nuclear technology. With AI, we are accepting one in six and calling it progress.

Meanwhile, Altman told an interviewer he hopes she has not let her young son use ChatGPT yet. The CEO of the company is telling parents to keep their kids away from the product. His words: "My highest order bit is to not destroy the world with AI." He writes letters to his infant son at night in case the future does not go well.

That is not confidence. That is confession.

The Body

Day 6 of Fast 3. Weight: 311.9 lbs.

Yesterday was Easter. The entire country was eating. Ham, chocolate, mashed potatoes, pie. Every single surface in every single house covered in food. Roxy's family had dinner. The smells. The sounds. The traditions. And we sat there on salt water.

That is conditioned hunger at full volume. Not homeostatic. The body did not need food. The body has over 100,000 calories of stored fuel in adipose tissue ready to burn. The body is fine. The environment demanded food. The social pressure demanded food. The ritual demanded food. That is Dr. Jason Fung's third type. Conditioned hunger. And it is the hardest one to fight because it has nothing to do with biology and everything to do with belonging.

Fung just got major press this week. Fox News ran a feature on his hunger framework. He told them flat out: until you understand what hunger is, what causes it, and how to deal with it, you cannot just eat less. If you simply eat less, your hunger increases. Then you are always fighting with yourself.

We have been saying this. Caloric restriction is a lie. You cannot outrun your hormones. Fung gave the world the vocabulary for what we already know from living it. Three hungers. Homeostatic: the physical, hormonal signal that your body needs fuel. Hedonic: the pleasure and dopamine response that makes food feel like a reward. Conditioned: the environmental triggers, the social pressure, the rituals that tell you it is time to eat whether you need to or not.

On Day 6 of a 21-day fast, every single one of those is active at some level. Homeostatic has faded because insulin levels have dropped and the body has switched to ketosis. Hedonic spikes every time you see food on a screen or walk past a kitchen. Conditioned was screaming at full blast yesterday at Easter dinner.

Name it. Tag it. Fight it. That is the protocol. The addict who can name the trigger has a chance. The addict who just says "I'm hungry" has already lost.

Fung also pointed out that ultraprocessed foods, including products with artificial chemicals and sweeteners, actually create more hunger and make them harder to stop eating. That is engineered addiction. Same as cigarettes. Same as my dad's Winston Reds. The food industry does not want you to stop eating. Their revenue model depends on you being hungry.

The House

Mortgage rates: 6.5%. Fed meets April 28. No cut expected.

The 30-year fixed is hovering between 6.46 and 6.5%. The Federal Reserve is holding at 3.50 to 3.75%. The next meeting is three weeks away. Nobody expects a rate cut. The prediction from most analysts: 6.0 to 6.3% by end of Q2. Maybe.

Mortgage applications dropped 10.5% in a single week. Buyers are pulling back. But refinance activity is still 33 to 41% higher than the same period last year. Here is what that means for sellers: your competition just thinned. Fewer listings. More serious buyers. This is the window. Not when rates are low and everybody floods the market.

When the conditioned hunger hits and the AI news is terrifying and the rates are sideways and nobody cares about your struggle. That is when the anchor holds or it does not.

Altman says his highest priority is not destroying the world. The man building the machine admits the machine could destroy everything. He writes letters to his infant son in case the future does not go well. That is not the confidence of a builder. That is the confession of a man who is not sure the thing he is building can be controlled.

And that loops right back to the show thesis. If the people building the machine do not trust the machine, why should we? The answer is: we do not. We trust the One who built us. The machine is a tool. Jesus Christ is Lord. And the distance between those two things is the distance between hope and despair.
